Tutorial videos – B to D

BACK TO FORWARDS! The next important stage in your dog’s training, once you’ve perfected ‘Backwards is the way forward’ (see next item). When the dog can bring the sheep up steadily to you as you walk back, it’s time to turn around and go “Back to forwards”! – 13.5 min.

BACKWARDS IS THE WAY FORWARD! This is probably our most important sheepdog training video once your dog can maintain control of the sheep. Walking backwards with the dog bringing the sheep to you will improve the dog’s pace, working distance, and general control – 12.5 min.

BALANCE? WHAT’S THE POINT?? To understand how your dog works, you must understand the ‘point of balance’. You would imagine the point of balance means the dog must be on the opposite side of the stock from the handler. That’s not always the case with sheep and cattle dogs though – 7.0 min.

CALM BUT FIRM. It takes self-control and patience from the trainer! If you can be calm yet firm with your dog, it will soon become far easier to train. A great way to begin is by trying to be as quiet as possible while training the dog – 10.5 min.

CLOSE WORK (1-2). Getting stock through gateways and into pens can be tricky, but we can help you. As with all training, you should start off with easy tasks. Gradually move on to more difficult work as the dog’s confidence grows – 10 min – Part 2 15 min.

CONFIDENCE The dog’s confidence is hugely important. It can make the difference between a task being completed successfully, or failing. Watch this video to find out why confidence is so important when a sheep or cattle dog works stock, and how to improve it – 2.0 min.

DRIVING (1-3). Driving is useful for a working sheepdog. There are times when you need the dog to take the stock away from you, rather than bring them closer. Driving’s not so difficult to teach, once you know why some dogs find it difficult at first – 7.5 min – Part 2 7.5 min | Part 3 7 min.

EDUCATING GLORIA. A complete sheepdog training session with a strong young dog. Complete sessions such as this one will teach you a lot more than basic training clips. They help you to get a more complete picture of what a training session is like – 23.5 min.

ELIMINATE THE TOILET BREAK. A dog which stops to relieve itself while it’s working, is likely to lose control of its sheep or cattle. It’s easy to teach your dog to toilet on command (before working) so it doesn’t need to interrupt its work. Soon the dog will relieve itself before work without being told – 4.5 min.

EVE AT THE PEN. Another chance to watch a complete sheepdog training session teaching young Eve to get sheep into, and out of, a pen. We highly recommend you watch full training sessions to get a broader picture of sheepdog training in real time – 36.0 min.

FLANK BOTH WAYS. (Why your dog should). Some farmers and shepherds think it’s not necessary to insist on the dog learning to go either way around sheep when commanded. They’re wrong. Find out why it’s important to train left or right-handed dogs to work equally well in either direction – 5.5 min.

FLOCK WORK. The move from training ground, to flock work can be a huge step for a trainee dog – 10.0 min.
